Mardy Fish making it into the third round and running Tommy Robredo (11) in straights is worthy of mention…so is Maria Sharapova slapping Lindsay Davenport silly around the court. It was 6-1, 6-3 but it really wasn’t even that close. Davenport wasn’t on her game and Sharapova was. That made for an unattractive butt whuppin’ for Lindsay. Lindsay looked slow, looked tentative at times, and didn’t come close to matching Sharapova’s energy.
Roddick and Nadal on Track
Roddick kept on savoring that sweet draw he has, blowing Michael Berrer away in three (6-2, 6-2, 6-3), and Rafael Nadal “nadaliated” Florent Serra (6-0, 6-2, 6-2), getting off the court before his sore knees could begin talking to him.
French Fireworks Ahead?
If Frenchmen Richard Gasquet (8) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga make it through their respective third-round matches, which they should, they will cross swords. Can we say, “sick and silly shotmaking?” Whether we can say it or not, they’ll be bringing it, so don’t miss that one if it comes off. But I’m getting ahead of myself…
Day 4 Fireworks?
unless you tune in at 3:30 A.M. for Baghdatis and Safin, your shotmaking display tonight will have to come from Roger Federer and Fabrice Santoro. They don’t Santoro The Magician for nothing, and we all know what Federer’s about, so it ought to be a fun match until Roger wants to end it.
Venus & Kuznetsova Tonight
Venus Williams (8) could be in for a tough match if she doesn’t bring her A-game. Camille “Call me ‘Pan’” Pin will get to the first two winners, so Venus needs to be ready to hit at least three per point. Venus should prevail, as should Svetlana Kuznetsova (2). But Kuznetsova likes to go three, so don’t be surprised if Tsvetana Pironkova stretches her.
