No major upsets took place on Day 2, but there were some surprises and some intriguing match-ups are in store for Day 3.
Round 1 Upset Predictions Results
As far as my upset calls from Round 1, Blake smoked Massu in straights for his first win against him, Ljubicic did make the early exit as predicted, and Malisse won the first two sets but couldn’t hold on for the win.
Round 2 Upset Potential
In the women’s draw, Tatiana Golovin (13) could have some trouble with Aravane Rezai, Elena Dementieva (11) could struggle with Annabel Medina Garrigues, and Daniela Hantuchova (9) may be in some trouble against Alize Cornet. On the men’s side, Sam Querrey could have his Grand Slam breakthrough against DmitryTursunov (32), Marat Safin could take out Marcos Baghdatis (15) if he’s on his game, and Jesse Levine could redefine himself as more than a hitting partner for Roger Federer versus Jarkko Nieminen (24).
Intrigue Matches
The premier match of the day is Lindsay Davenport versus Maria Sharapova (5). If Davenport pulls off the win it would be an upset on paper, but only on paper. Davenport’s recent record is second only to Henin’s, but Sharapova played as well as she has for some time at the Tour Championships in November. This match is tough to call, but should be great to see.
Marcos Baghdatis and Marat Safin ought to be premium entertainment. Both are incredible shotmakers, and if they are both on, this match should draw some “ooos” and “ahhhs.” Not-quite-18-year old Alize Cornet, who took Jelena Jankovic (3) to three sets in the ‘07 US Open, and Daniela Hantuchova (9) should offer some drama as well. And for those pulling for American tennis, Sam Querrey versus Dmitry Tursunov (32), Sam Warburg against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Jesse Levine taking on Jarkko Nieminen (24) are matches you may want to check out.
