Update of the standings in Lee County, Florida's USTA team competition
After a 3-0 start Fort Myers Racquet Club (FMR) 2.5 women’s now trail Mid Cape Racquet Club (MCR) by one individual match won (8-7), although both teams have 3-1 records. MCR, has gone 3-0 since a loss to the racquets of FMR in their first match. The winner of the final match between MCR and FMR on November 27 should determine the League winner.
FMR continues to dominate the Men’s 3.0, posting a 5-0 record with only three matches left in the Fall Season. The Women’s 3.0 competition remains very tight with Punta Gorda Club (PGC) clinging to a slim ½ match lead over FMR. PGC is 3-2 and FMR sits at 2-2. PGC and FMR play again on November 29, with only one match remaining, so the winner of that contest should be in the driver’s seat. However, is not out of the running at 2-3 with one match remaining against FMR.
PGC’s 7-0 record puts them clearly ahead of the pack in the Men’s 3.5s. With only one close match, a 3-2 victory over Mid Cape-Ryan. At 5-1 Landings is the only team with a realistic chance to catch PGC. Landings plays Mid Cape-Ryan on November 28 and a win in that match and their last match against Estero CC @ Vines (2-4), combined with a PGC loss could give Landings the Division win. Chances aren’t very good since PGC plays 1-5 Cape Coral Yacht Club (CCY) in their final match.
Heritage Palms’ (HP) 3.5 women have had only one tough match against CCY-Eileen on their way to a 7-0, league-leading record. PGC-Donna and CCY-Eileen both sit at 5-2, and each has one match remaining against HP. With three matches left, the crown is still up for grabs, but it will have to be snatched from the tight grasp of HP.
Like MCR’s 2.5 women, their 4.0 women are also challenging for the league title. They lead FMR by a ½-match, holding a 3-1 record to FMR’s 2-1. Each team has beaten the other once and both have beaten winless PGC, but every team match played in this division has gone 3-2, so anything can happen down the stretch.
In Men’s 4.0, a heated battle is being fought by Three Oaks Park (TOP) and Grandezza, both sitting at 5-1. TOP holds the lead by virtue of two more individual wins than Grandezza (22 – 20). At 4-2, MCR is not far behind and has matches remaining with both TOP and Grandezza. The struggle for supremacy in this division is not likely to be settled until the final match of the season.
Although the competition is stiffening, Park Meadow (PM) would need to collapse totally to relinquish the lead in the Men’s 4.5. In their most recent, recorded match PM squeaked out a 3-2 win over Grandezza to remain undefeated at 5-0. MCR and Grandezza are still mathematically alive, both sitting at 2-3 with four matches left.
