Almost 500 players on 39 teams in four men's and four women's divisions battle for a spot at Nationals in Lee's USTA Adult Leagues.
The time may be getting ready to fall backward, but Lee County’s Adult Tennis League’s fall season has sprung forward so quickly that there are skid marks throughout the Lee County tennis community. Four hundred and eighty-eight players on 39 teams in eight divisions are vying for supremacy in Lee’s USTA Adult Leagues.
At the top of the league food chain, Park Meadow’s (PM) Men’s 4.5 team swept the first third of the fall season, going 3-0 versus Grandezza, Mid Cape Racquet Club (MCR), and Gateway Golf & Country Club (GGC). Grandezza is holding onto second with a 2-1 record, MCR is third at 1-2, and GGC brings up the rear at 0-3.
In Men’s 4.0, Three Oaks Park (TOP) and GGC are both 3-1 with an identical number of individual matches won (14) and lost (6), but TOP holds the edge with 14 sets lost to GGC’s 17. Grandezza has equaled the number of team wins and losses (3-1) but has lost more individual matches (12-8). Not far behind is MCR at 2-2 with an 11-9 individual match record. Fort Myers Racquet Club (FMR) (1-3) and The Landings Golf, Yacht & Tennis (0-4) round out the standings.
In Women’s 4.0, MCR and FMR have identical 2-1 records, with each winning 8 and losing 7 individual matches, and losing 16 sets. MCR holds the tiebreak edge, losing 135 games to FMR’s 141. This promises to be one of the more competitive divisions as each team match played thus far went 3-2.
In the largest division (9 teams), Men’s 3.5, Punta Gorda Club (PGC) is 5-0 with just one close match thus far, that a 3-2 victory against Mid Cape-Ryan. The Landings is in close second at 4-1, with GGC in third at 3-1. Mid Cape-Ryan sits at 3-2, and a logjam of teams, including Mariner High School, FMR, Cape Coral Yacht Club (CCY), and Estero Country Club @ Vines, are at 1-3. Mid Cape-Delgado inhabits the cellar at 0-3.
In the second largest division (8 teams), Women 3.5, Heritage Palms leads the way at 4-0, with Punta Gorda Club (PGC), CCY, and Fort Myers Racquet-Patricia sitting at second, third, and fourth respectively with identical 3-1 records. Only five individual matches separate the three. MCR sits at 2-2, GGC at 1-3, and Fort Myers Racquet-Kay and Fiddlesticks trail at 0-4. With much parity at the top, this race promises to go right down to the final match of the season.
