The Lee County Community Tennis Association’s (LCCTA) commitment to the game and its players (current, past and future) has been evident in 2007. As a result of LCCTA volunteers’ ubiquitous presence at a variety of community events, members of the local tennis community are well aware of the LCCTA’s commitment and contribution to the community. It is good to know that individuals outside of the Lee tennis community also recognize those contributions.
At the recent USTA Florida 58th Annual Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Weekend, Executive Director of USTA Florida, Doug Booth, presented Harriet Bohannon, President of the LCCTA, the CTA Volunteer of the Year award. The description of the award reads, “Presented to a Community Tennis Association volunteer who has made generous contributions that have resulted in the growth of tennis in their local community.” The enthusiastic ovation offered by the LCCTA members in attendance, including husband Bo Bohannon, attested to the esteem in which Bohannon is held.
As Bohannon so graciously acknowledged in the most eloquent of acceptance speeches, during which she had all LCCTA volunteers in attendance stand to accept the award with her, she may have received the award for her tireless efforts, but the LCCTA could not have accomplished what it did without the support and effort of many committed individuals. Among those offering extremely vital contributions were Katie Barham, Connie Fox, Glen Kouns, and the husband/wife team of Andrea and Chuck Nelson. The superb work of Lyn Bruner and other members of the Landings Tennis Association in directing the Florida Open surely contributed to the cachet garnered by the LCCTA at the Annual Meeting.
There are so many more who contributed to the LCCTA’s success this year that it would be beyond the scope of this piece to name them all. However, warranting particular mention is J. Webb Horton, Director of Tennis at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), who has arranged for the use of FGCU's tennis facility on multiple occasions. These and the many other dedicated volunteers who contributed their time, energy and talent to the LCCTA in 2007 will be acknowledged and celebrated at the Inaugural LCCTA Volunteer Appreciation Round Robin Luncheon on January 5, 2008 at FGCU.
Some of the volunteers who were fortunate enough to have attended the USTA Annual Meeting were captured on film, and this link offers a pictorial tribute to some of the LCCTA’s volunteers enjoying the weekend at Amelia Island.
